In complex environments, communication is safety infrastructure.
SAFETY 360° SEVILLA examines the communication capabilities that support safety across healthcare and other safety-critical contexts — bringing together patient experience, scientific evidence and cross-sector expertise.
The dialogue will identify which capabilities matter, how they can be taught and assessed, and how they can inform education, organisational practice and concrete follow-up.

What capability needs are we actually seeing across these very different worlds?
Safety 360° is a facilitated working dialogue — not a sequence of conventional lectures. Short evidence-informed inputs open the conversation; participants then work across perspectives to identify recurring communication challenges, capability needs and practical ways forward.

We build a shared picture of the communication capabilities that matter across safety contexts — and explore how they can be deliberately developed, assessed and put into practice.
A dedicated working forum bringing together patients, families, patient organisations and patient educators to identify the communication problems that affect safety, trust, access and continuity of care — and to define what patients and families need from professionals, healthcare organisations and education.
Participants will work from lived experience towards concrete priorities: which communication capabilities should be taught and assessed, what institutions should change, and how meaningful improvement can be recognised.
The priorities developed on 4 March will open and orient the International Safety 360° Dialogue on 5 March. Patient rapporteurs will carry them into the international discussion, where they will be translated into educational priorities, organisational action, indicators and concrete follow-up.

Professor Annegret Hannawa is the founding President of EISCOM and Co-Chair of Safety 360° Sevilla. She is Professor of Communication Science at the Università della Svizzera italiana and Associate Faculty at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her work examines how communication contributes to safety and risk in complex environments, with a particular focus on safe communication, safety culture and error management. In Safety 360°, she brings this communication-science perspective into dialogue with expertise across sectors and disciplines.

Professor José Valencia Martín is a specialist in preventive medicine and public health and Co-Chair of Safety 360° Sevilla. He is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Seville and clinician-researcher at Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío, and leads the RAICESP research group at the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville. His work connects epidemiology, healthcare quality, patient safety, infection prevention and public health training.

The Patient & Family Forum will take place on 4 March 2027 in Sevilla and will be conducted in Spanish.
It is a dedicated working forum bringing together patients, family members, patient organisations and educators to identify the communication challenges that most affect safety, trust, access and continuity of care — and what needs to change.
Participants will work together to define priorities for safer communication, the capabilities patients and families need from professionals and institutions, and concrete proposals for education, practice and organisational improvement.
The Forum will produce a Seville Memorandum on Safe Communication with Patients and Families. Its priorities will open and help orient the International Safety 360° Dialogue on 5 March, where they will be carried forward into capability needs, educational priorities, research and evaluation questions, and concrete follow-up.
